These 4 ducklings are 4 weeks old. Their owner bought them as chicks from a breeder. The breeder advised that they were too small to eat normal duck pellets and told the owner to feed them oats and rice.
Unfortunately, this advice was terrible. The diet was inadequate for a growing baby bird. Ducks in particular need niacin in their diet and a range of other vitamins and minerals. A good quality duck starter or game bird starter pellet, fed in combination with pellets is essential if you want a healthy baby bird.
Consequently, these ducklings presented with neurological symptoms, emaciated and unable to stand, let alone walk. They didn't even have the strength to feed themselves. They required urgent hospitalisation if they were to live. Their owner agreed to 3 days of hospital treatment. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to help them catch up.
In this video, Practice Manager and Avian Behaviourist Mel Vincent has come in after hours on her day off to give the birds some extra care in the hope that it might be enough to change what is looking like an inevitable sad ending.
Unfortunately with these cases, the clinic is restricted to what the owner decides to do. If the owner can't afford or doesn't want to go ahead with treatment, the option to euthanise is very much on the table. These birds need a miracle.
