Back in the 16th, 17th, and early 18th centuries, you could be abducted by a press gang, and be forced to serve in the British Royal Navy. Pressed sailors had to serve in terrible conditions, and in huge naval battles like the Battle of Trafalgar. Sailors had to endure this terrible practice until the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
