Natural Killer cells are part of the innate immune system. They recognize 'sick' cells, which have internalized their MHCI receptors. Nucleated cells internalize their MHCI receptors when they sense insults such as infection or cell transformation (cancer). Natural Killer cells can destroy these sick cells by releasing perforin and granzymes which induce apoptosis.
