Artist Statement:
To explore the unknown is an act of belief - the belief in a collective imagination.

From the creaking boards of a repurposed whaling vessel emerges a transient society
Rising from the crest of a wave, soon to vanish
But for a moment they sing, write and sketch
Inventing a cartography of poetics to converse with their vast and isolating environment
While the mythic power of the Southern Ocean enfolds them

Embracing the turbulent mediums of pen and watercolour and taking inspiration from archival black and white photographs of the s.y Aurora, inky lines, etched and waterlogged parry and lunge across each frame, as the jagged rhythms of the ocean conceal creatures of myth - like those who curl at the edges of medieval sea maps.

Oliver Quinn is an audio-visual artist from nipaluna/Hobart, whose practice involves 3D animation and sound design. He is often inspired by unexpected collisions between organic life forms and industrial worlds. His recent work includes surreal music videos and audio-visual projections, screened at community events like Light Up The Lane.
The Last Great Whale, a piece inspired by local whaling histories, was featured in last year’s Stories After Dark. In 2022, Oliver won the Underground Art Prize for his animation, Connection.

Stories After Dark in collaboration with Libraries Tasmania
DARK MOFO 2023

6 young artists (age 12-25) were selected to explore and uncover what lays dormant within the National and Tasmanian archive rooms, to find items of resonance to guide a creative response.
Each artist, assigned an industry mentor, present new, site-specific works to transform the library car park into a shared dynamic exhibition space.
