The global retaliation hit farmers hard, necessitating billions in government subsidies. This approach is not winning; it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul with tariffs.

Reshoring Reality Check: Trump promised jobs, but factory employment remained flat by 2020, with automation as the main disruptor. Even in 2025, most critical goods still come from abroad. Tariffs alone don’t build factories; investment, workforce training, and multilateral strategy are needed.

Trade Deficit: Larger Than Ever: Trump claimed to eliminate the trade deficit, but it reached over $1 trillion in 2024, among the highest in U.S. history. Tariffs don’t address fundamental issues like excessive consumption.

Trump’s unilateral trade policies alienated allies and empowered rivals. He imposed tariffs on Canada and Europe, withdrew from the TPP, and weakened the WTO, creating a vacuum that China filled with ties to BRICS, Africa, and Latin America. This led to a decline in America’s moral and economic leadership while China built its own trade blocs. In a world requiring cooperation against shared threats, Trump’s isolationism hindered progress.

To address trade reform, we need rules, partnerships, and solutions that benefit all Americans, moving beyond slogans and towards practical strategies.
