For the 1909 Paris premiere of 'Les Sylphides', Diaghilev commissioned several Russian composers to orchestrate Chopin's piano music for this 'romantic reverie' ballet in which white-clad sylphs dance with a young man in the moonlight. Stravinsky's contribution consisted of his own arrangements of a Nocturne in Ab and the final Grande Valse Brillante. The dancers at that Paris premiere included Nijinsky as the young poet and Pavlova as one of the sylphs. In this performance, from the 2003 BBC Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall, Oliver Knussen conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
