"There are many exciting developments and treatment breakthroughs going on in the world of research. From 2005 to today there have been a handful of products that have come to market to treat various retinal conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and a type of inflammation in the eye called uveitis. Some of the more recent drugs that are used to treat patients include medications that we physically put inside the eye via an injection. We numb the patient so they don’t feel anything, but it is an injection in the eye. These medicines are capable of taking a person who has fluid in the center part of their retina known as the macula, and getting that fluid to dry up.

"Some of the breakthrough products that are commonly used include drugs such as Avastin®, Lucentis®, Eylea®, Macugen and Ozurdex®. Each of these drugs has slightly different properties but they all have certain benefits in various retinal conditions that can occur."
