8.23.2011 -- A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia forced evacuations of all the memorials and monuments on the National Mall in Washington and rattled nerves from South Carolina to Rhode Island. Employees empty out onto the streets from the Shepard Building the building when they felt the earthquake on the upper floors. Providence City Hall was evacuated and fire trucks showed up, putting up a ladder to check the upper floors. Employees were allowed to go back in after about a half hour. Employees at Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the GTECH buildings were also evacuated for a short time. Providence Journal video by Mary Murphy & Steve Szydlowski
