You don't have to travel far in Australia to hear a story about someone being chased by a snake, but is there any truth to these stories?
So do snakes really chase people?
It’s a more complicated question then you might at first think. The University of Sydney conducted a study on Eastern Brown snakes, where 40 snakes had radio transmitters attached and where tracked over the course of a year. Every time the snakes where located the researchers recorded the snakes reaction to being approached. Out of 455 recorded interactions, about half of the snakes fled when approached, with most of the remainder staying still hidden in foliage. On 12 occasions however the snakes where recorded to approach the researchers, and in 3 of these was considered to be aggressive.
Essentially wether or not snakes chase people depends largley on what we consider "chasing" to be. Many snakes will certianly advance towards a person in an attempt to either get past them to safety, or to ensure the person leaves them alone, which to many people feel like they are being chased, in both cases however, as soon as the snake has a safe escape route, its usually already heading the other direction. Essentially they don't actually want to catch you!
