A mother in Polk County, Florida, is demanding an apology and disciplinary action after she says her 6-year-old son’s teacher sang an offensive version of the “Happy Birthday” song in class.

Video shows the teacher at Floral Avenue Elementary in Bartow singing lyrics that compared the child to a monkey. The boy’s mother says the incident is deeply hurtful and tied to racist stereotypes.

Polk County Public Schools confirmed the matter is under investigation. Prather is calling for an apology, accountability and counseling for her son, who has since been moved to another classroom.
