Most people read Vayeshev as a family drama.
The Torah reads it as a Messianic blueprint.

Yosef is not just a righteous son.
He is a pattern.

Beloved by his father.
Rejected by his brothers.
Stripped of his robe.
Sold for silver.
Suffers as a servant.
Exalted over the nations.
Becomes the source of salvation for the world.
Unrecognized by his own brothers.
Secretly preserves Israel.
And one day—revealed.

If that sounds familiar, it should.

The sages taught there are two Messianic roles:
• Mashiach ben Yosef — the suffering servant
• Mashiach ben David — the victorious king

Yosef embodies the first.

Midrash Rabbah says something astonishing:
“While the brothers were selling Yosef, Ya’akov was mourning, Yehudah was busy with his life… and God was creating the light of Messiah.”

Messiah was being formed inside suffering.

Vayeshev opens with Yosef and Yehudah—Rachel’s son and Leah’s son—the roots of the two kingdoms of Israel.
Both carried Messianic potential.

Yehudah produced David.
Yosef produced Ephraim.

And God made a promise to Jeroboam, son of Yosef:
“If you walk in My ways, I will build you a house like David’s.”

A Messianic promise.

But Jeroboam failed.
Idolatry replaced obedience.
The calendar was altered.
The priesthood was corrupted.

The promise was forfeited.
So God did something profound.

“I will take the stick of Yosef and the stick of Yehudah and make them one.”
(Ezekiel 37)

Not two Messiahs.
One.

This is why Messiah comes twice:
Once as Yosef — to suffer
Once as David — to reign

The sages taught Mashiach ben Yosef would be pierced, mourned, and raised.
Zechariah says Jerusalem will weep for him “as for an only son.”

Yosef’s dreams reveal it.

The sheaf that rises while all others bow.
The sun, moon, and stars submitting—not in Yosef’s lifetime, but in the resurrection.

Even the Hasidic commentaries say:
“He will be slain… and he will live.”

Vayeshev is not just history.
It is prophecy.

The suffering Messiah has come.
The King Messiah is coming.

May Hashem speedily bring Mashiach ben David,
gather the exiles,
restore Jerusalem,
and establish true peace in the world—
soon and in our days. ✨✡️
