Captured after the bloody assault on Little Round Top at Gettysburg, Captain D.U. Barziza’s war took a dramatic turn as he faced the hardships of being a Confederate prisoner of war. In this episode, follow Barziza from a Union field hospital to the overcrowded boxcars of prisoner transport, eventually landing in hospitals in Baltimore and Chester, Pennsylvania.

In late August 1863, Barziza began his journey to Johnson’s Island, the infamous POW camp for Confederate officers. Through his own words, we uncover the struggles, indignities, and resilience of a Texas officer held behind enemy lines.
