The new moon day of the lunar calendar in the month of Pushya, that is bhahula amāvāsyā to be specific, is the day to remember and honour Sri. Purandara Dāsa (1484 – 1564) for his significant and legendary contribution to Carnatic music. This particular day, we observe as his Puñya-dina or Ārādhana.

Remembering Karnataka Sangeetha Pithāmaha with reverence on his Ārādhana, we offer our salutations through a rare rendition of a composition of Purandara Dāsa by Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna’s (BMK).

BMK's contribution to popularise Purandara Dāsa’s compositions is not only limited to the renditions in his live concerts or the all-time great film hits in Kannada over several decades, but also as a poet he translated them and sang them for the non-Kannada audience worldwide.

Here, in this offering BMK presents "Maneyolagādó Góvinda" in the rāga Ābhógi. This video is from a TV broadcast called “Swara Rāga Sudha” from 1987.

Here is a English transliteration of lyrics and a free translation into English.

Why do you want to go play in other's homes, O Mukunda?]

[I will decorate your forehead with a tilaka,
I will make kajjaya (a sweet made from the batter of rice & jaggery, deep fried)
for you using freshly made butter,
I will decorate your being with new jewellery,
O adorable kid, I will be glad seeing you thus!]

[Do you want to be called a thief?
Then what would become of your title " Lakshmi" Narayana?
Enough with the company of Gopikas,
O our Purandara Vitthala, come inside the home !]

Come, let's observe Purandara Dasara puñya-dina with Muraligānam!
