With their dramatic juxtapositions and intense colours, Handel’s ultra-modern English oratorios took eighteenth-century London by storm. His audiences were also drawn in by the commentaries on contemporary social and political life embedded in the Old Testament stories that provided Handel’s librettists with their ostensible subjects. The most famous oratorio of all is Handel’s Messiah – the staple of choral societies the world over. Made up entirely of biblical texts selected by Handel’s collaborator, Charles Jennens, it was composed in just twenty-four days in the autumn of 1741 and premiered in Dublin the following April. Highlighting contemporary themes in Handel’s reinvented English oratorio, O/Modernt Messiah takes us back to the future. Rap artist Baruch Israel and his crew improvise lyrics in response to Handel’s words and music, entering into an emotional and spiritual dialogue with the sacred texts that stresses their contemporary relevance. Haunting poetic beauty and brilliant vocal pyrotechnics combine as Baba Israel reflects on Messiah with an urgency and power that invites us to look again at the world we live in and contemplate our role and place in it.
