Maybe you've heard other people talk about speaking in tongues and didn't quite understand the purpose of it. Possibly you are someone who already speaks in tongues but don't understand all of the benefits. This video is for you!

1. When we pray in tongues we are building up our faith (Jude 20). It doesn't actually give us more faith, it just strengthens the faith we already have. I compare it to someone who is preparing to run a race. They start by stretching their muscles to prepare for action. In the same way, Praying in the Spirit is like stretching your spiritual muscles and sets you up for dynamic action.

2. The Apostle Paul taught that those who pray in tongues encourage or edify themselves. Something about the spiritual language God has given to believers causes our spirits and souls to be supernaturally encouraged as we engage in praying in the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 14:4).

3. The Bible teaches that we don't always know how we should pray (Romans 8:26-27). By praying in the Holy Spirit, we can be supernaturally guided by the Spirit to pray in direct line with God's will. As the Spirit prays through us and for us, God understands and applies those prayers as He sees fit.

4. According to the prophet Isaiah, when the Spirit of God was given to the church, speaking in tongues would bring rest and refreshing to the weary. (Isaiah 28:11). That is why Paul referenced Isaiah's writing in 1 Corinthians chapter 14 when he was dealing with this subject.

5. Finally, praying in tongues is a method to give thanks to God (1 Corinthians 14:16-17). Staying in a constant attitude of thanksgiving and praise is God's desire for every believer (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
