Spotted apatelodes is found in North America, ranging from Maine and southern Ontario to Florida, west to Texas, and north to Wisconsin.
Inhabits various habitats, including deciduous and mixed forests, as well as woodland edges.
Adults are on wing from May to August.
Spotted apatelodes follows the typical moth life cycle of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult.
There are two generations per year in the south and one in the north.

Adult moths do not feed.
The name torrefacta may come from Latin words suggesting "to burn or char", possibly due to skin irritation caused by touching the caterpillars for some people.
Adult moths are nocturnal and attracted to light sources.
Males may exhibit territory-guarding behaviors to attract females.
They may use crypsis (camouflage), Batesian mimicry (eyespot patterns on hindwings), and deimatic display (flashing hindwings) as defense mechanisms.
The Spotted Apatelodes moth, scientifically known as Apatelodes torrefacta, was first described in 1797 by Sir James Edward Smith. It's a member of the family Apatelodidae, also known as the American silkworm moths.
