Hi, I'm Dr. Mark Carney and I'm a naturopathic doctor and an acupuncturist with a family practice in Denver, Colorado called Thriveology (Formerly Your Healing Place).

Let's talk about natural healing and holistic medicine. What is natural medicine? Natural medicine is based on the idea that it's our birthright to be healthy and that built into us is a self-healing mechanism.

In other words, if I cut my finger, I don't have to tell my finger what to do. It will heal on its own.

Natural medicine is based on therapeutics that are derived from nature that are safe, effective and minimally invasive. When someone comes in with a health condition, my job, as a practitioner, is to identify and treat the cause, not merely mask the symptom.

The analogy I'd like to use is the red light on a dashboard of our cars. When the red light goes off, we wouldn't simply go in with scissors, and snip the wire to the red light and say the problem is solved. We would want to know, why is that red light happening?

Our symptoms are the red lights. Viewed in this way, our symptoms are our wisest teachers. When I work with patients, I take on a role as a detective to find out what's at the root of their illness and I spend a lot of time with my patients. I absolutely love what I do because I can offer people options that they never knew they had.
