Here's a video on the main difference between the KR-1i and KR-2i Nucleon back protectors inserts from Alpinestars. Mainly, the KR-1i is a racetrack-oriented back pad with a hard-plastic shell that will aid in sliding at high speeds, which is one of the most-common crashing scenarios on the track.

Both back protectors (KR-1i and KR-2i) are made of the same polyurethane foam that adapts and contours nicely across the back. They're both CE-certified as Level 2 in the 1621-2 standard. The KR-2i back protector does not have a sliding plastic; that's where the only difference resides versus the KR-1i.

In essence, think of the Alpinestars Nucleon KR-1i as a back protector for racing on the track and think of the Alpinestars Nucleon KR-2i as a back protector for street use. However, you can absolutely use the KR-1i for street use and the KR-2i on the track too.
