John Legend has urged his hometown of Springfield, Ohio, to embrace Haitian immigrants in a video response to claims mentioned by former President Donald Trump that they were eating locals’ cats and dogs.

Trump mentioned the unsubstantiated rumor during his TV debate with Kamala Harris. Its source was traced to a Facebook post by NewsGuard.

Addressing the claim, Legend said, “Nobody’s eating cats. Nobody’s eating dogs.”

Legend said Springfield’s need for workers resulted in a large number of Haitian immigrants arriving.

Acknowledging that the population of the town had increased by 25 percent, Legend called the challenges “growing pains,” mentioning the “new language, new culture, and new dietary preferences” of newcomers.

He pointed to past immigration by German, Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Polish ancestors, all chasing the “American Dream”.
