Hymenocallis littoralis, the Beach Spider Lily: exotic looking, beautifully scented and easy to grow

Описание к видео Hymenocallis littoralis, the Beach Spider Lily: exotic looking, beautifully scented and easy to grow

Hymenocallis littoralis, also known as the Beach Spider Lily, is a bulbous plant from Central and Northern South America, blooming between mid summer and late autumn, with bright green leaves and wonderful exotic looking spidery flowers, with very long and thin tepals, and extremely long stamens connected by a delicate white membrane, at the centre of which originates a very long stigma: the overall effect is a show of some of the strangest and most delicate flowers, especially when they gently move in the breeze (avoid however very windy areas because the flower stem might break). An added bonus to this flowers is a wonderful delicate fragrance, reminding to some gardeners a vanilla scent, but to me it reminds more of a beautiful sweet, soapy fragrance, like when hanging clothes that have been just washed with a gorgeously scented detergent. The plant is very easy to grow, keep it moist from spring to early autumn, in well drained soil and full sun or partial shade, lifting the bulbs before the first frost and re-planting the bulbs in spring, keeping the bulbs (or a pot, if you grow this plant in a pot) in a frost free place, ideally at a temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius. A curiosity: I bought this species from Hymalayan Gardens (a nursery in the UK) as Hyline grandiflora, but I could not find any information about such a species, so when the bulb bloomed and I recognised it as Hymenocallis, I asked to the Facebook groups "Bulborum" and "South American Bulbs" some help in the species identification and I was very happy to have found very good help in identifying this species as Hymenocallis littoralis.
