Useful Information (part of my first Manual for steering-wheels leather-wrapping):
CHAPTER ONE/SECTION II-B 'How to take off or disengage a real 'airbag steering-wheel from its shaft.
...Beware! I have done this demonstration just as a way of information for my interested users. I do not recommend do it yourself if you are not well trained. Removing and installation should be done by a certified installer or technician who really knows right procedures to avoid potential injuries.
Anytime a steering wheel is removed for any reason, there is a possibility that the horn, airbag or other systems might be damaged.
To recognize if a steering-wheel houses an 'airbag unit' is easy...these wheels display common terms or logos as 'AIRBAG'; 'SRS' (Supplemental Restraint System); 'SIR' (Supplemental Inflatable System), etc.
The 'airbag' and 'inflation system' is housed in the center part or the steering-wheel...it is really a nylon bag properly properly folded and ready to be deployed in a fraction of a second when an igniter activates a chemical reaction of some combustible substances that are also housed in this module (NaN3 Sodium Azide, and KNO3 Potassium Nitrate). It results in an explosion that generates 'Nitrogen Gas'. This 'Nitrogen Gas' inflates the 'nylon bag' for almost three seconds and then escaping through the 'porous nylon bag', and of course, allowing the driver be freed in case of suffocation.
That is why the 'center plastic cover' should not be leather-covered. The 'plastic cover' has three 'weakened lines' (two verticals and one horizontal) That easily tear off while the airbag is deployed because of the explosion of the combustible substances that generate the nitrogen gas.
Notice: the 'central plastic covers' could be leather-recovered if you do some procedures on the leather respecting the 'breaking weakened lines' to easily allow the airbag deployment. I would teach you these 'tricks' in future videos.
What are the reasons to be very careful while removing or installing steering-wheels with airbags ?
An error could cause the lost of the airbag that could save the driver's life if he would crash his vehicle. If you were the one who is disassembling the steering-wheel...wou would get involved in a 'big problem'...these units are very expensive ! $$$
If you do not follow right procedures the 'airbag' would blast in front of your face while trying to remove it...if you are pretty near could result in a knock-out. Another case is if the 'airbag unit' is already removed and while seting it apart and if you incorrectly put it (upside down) the metal and hard plastic parts could blow out causing damage to your face or somebody else near there.
To avoid risky problems follow these safety statements: Do not drop the airbag module, Do not place it near hot areas, Carry the airbag module facing upwards, lightly far away from your face.Do not hit the airbag units, Place it in a ventilated area.
How do I know if the 'airbag' is working or rightly connected?
Wile turning on the ignition key of the car a 'red flashing light' with the 'airbag logo' appears on the instrument panel for a few seconds, then disappears...in other cases it flashes 6 or 7 times before vanishing.
Sometimes, the removing causes the computer of the car not to read or recognize if the 'airbag' is connected...so,...the 'airbag flashing light' on the instrument panel flashes continuously and does not stop...then it must be necessary to go with the technician to reset it with a special scanner for this purpose...
I hope you enjoy this video!
