The Crankshaft Position Sensor, or CKP sensor, determines timing for injection of each cylinder and detects engine speed. The vehicle's computer, or ECM, detects misfiring by using the CKP sensor to monitor fluctuations in crankshaft speed. it will then set DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) depending on how much misfiring occurs.

A failed crankshaft position sensor can exhibit engine stalling, rough idling, poor acceleration, engine hesitation or sputters during acceleration or engine surging.
