What is Artificial eye surgery? Artificial eye surgery, also known as ocular prosthesis surgery or eye prosthesis surgery, is a specialized procedure designed to replace a damaged or missing eye with a prosthetic eye. The goal is to restore a natural appearance, improve facial symmetry, and enhance the patient's quality of life. This type of surgery does not restore vision
Reasons for artificial eye surgery:
People may need artificial eye surgery due to a variety of causes, including:
-- Trauma or injury: Severe eye trauma or injury that causes irreparable damage to the eye.
-- Disease: Conditions like glaucoma, eye tumors, or severe infections within the eye can necessitate removal.
-- Congenital conditions: Individuals born with anophthalmos (absence of an eye) or microphthalmos (abnormally small eye) may benefit from prosthesis implantation to aid in socket development and appearance.
-- Painful, blind eye: In cases where a blind eye causes persistent pain that cannot be managed through other treatments, removal and prosthesis implantation may be recommended.
Surgical procedures
Two primary surgical techniques are employed for removing the damaged eye before prosthesis implantation:
-- Evisceration: This procedure involves removing the inner contents of the eye while preserving the outer shell (sclera) and eye muscles. An orbital implant is then placed within the scleral shell.
-- Enucleation: This procedure involves the complete removal of the eyeball. An orbital implant, often made of porous material, is then inserted into the eye socket, and the eye muscles are attached to it to allow for some movement of the prosthetic eye.
After the initial surgery, a temporary conformer (a clear plastic shell) is typically placed in the socket to maintain its shape during the healing process. Once the socket has healed, an ocularist (a specialist in creating artificial eyes) will create a custom-made prosthesis designed to match the size, shape, and color of the remaining natural eye.
Risks and complications
As with any surgical procedure, artificial eye surgery carries potential risks and complications, including:
-- Infection
-- Allergic reactions
-- Temporary discomfort or tightness
-- Socket complications
-- Implant displacement
-- Sympathetic ophthalmitis: A rare but serious complication, primarily seen after evisceration, where the healthy eye can be affected by inflammation.
