The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has problems. Major problems. He flies straight to Greenland from the United States--impossible! He gets a passport in a single day–are you kidding?. How can he do that? Then, Walter Mitty gets confused about his geography and tells us that the North Sea is between Greenland and Iceland. Turns out he’s 1500 miles off.

I am a travel agent and have been all over the world. I break down some of the most iconic travel movies--in the case, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty--and show you what they get wrong about traveling. Now, I don’t fault the filmmakers–they’re not expert travelers. This is more a chance to poke fun at some of the best travel movies ever made.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was released in 2013. Directed by and starring Ben Stiller, the movie follows a man who is stuck in his imagination, and does not appreciate the life he has--always longing for more. Only when he breaks out of his world does Walter begin to find himself.

Based on the short story by James Thurber (published in 1939), the material was alms-made into a film in 1947. It would not be until 2013, however, before the material resurfaced.

Ben Stiller, known first for comedy, is moving into a different stage of his career with this film. He is behind the camera and working as a director. Though he had directed before (Reality Bites, Tropic Thunder), these films were definitely built from his comedy DNA. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an attempt at dramatic film.

In many ways, the Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a rough draft for what many consider to be his magnum opus: Severance, a show on Apple TV.
