In the 1890s, American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston created a self-portrait that looked nothing like the images expected of women in the Victorian era. A beer stein, a cigarette, a confident posture - striking symbols at a time when middle- and upper-class women were expected to be modest, domestic, and decorative.
It made me wonder: why did this image feel so different? And what message was she trying to send?

The photographs shown are in the public domain, primarily from the Library of Congress, Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and used for educational and historical discussion.
