On March 16, 1244, the siege of Montségur, a castle in southern France, came to a tragic end. The castle, which had been held by Cathars, a Christian quasi-dualist sect, had been under siege by the royal forces of Louis IX of France and the bishops of Albi and Narbonne since May 1243. The siege lasted nine months, with the defenders holding out despite being outnumbered and outresourced.
The final assault on the castle was led by the seneschal Hugues des Arcis and his army of about 10,000 royal troops. After many failed attempts, the defenders were eventually forced to surrender. The terms of the surrender were harsh: all those who refused to renounce their Cathar faith, primarily the perfecti, were to be burned in a bonfire at the foot of the mountain.
On March 16, 210 perfecti and unrepentant credentes, along with about 200 other defenders, left the castle and made their way down to the base of the mountain. There, they were met by Bishop Bertrand Marty, who led them to the pyre that had been prepared for them. No stakes were needed, as the defenders voluntarily mounted the pyre and perished in the flames.
The siege of Montségur was a significant event in the history of the Albigensian Crusade, a conflict between the Catholic Church and the Cathar Church in southern France. The event marked the end of the Cathar resistance in the region and led to the eventual eradication of the Cathar sect by the Catholic Church.
