Loft Mountain Campground is the largest campground in the Shenandoah National Park. The campground sits atop Big Flat Mountain with outstanding views of the east and west from atop Loft Mountain Campground, along with access to Skyline Drive. The Appalachian Trail and a few of Shenandoah's Premier Waterfall Hikes can be accessed directly from Loft Mountain. I would highly recommend researching the hikes around the area, but here are some nearby hikes:

1. Doyles River and Jones Run Trail- you can either hike from the Loft Mountain and complete the entire circuit hike, which is a moderate 15 mile hike with 3 different waterfalls. You can shorten this hike by driving to Jones Run Parking Area at Mile Post 84 on Skyline Drive and hiking one of these 2 hikes for half the distance.

2. Blackrock Summit- easy 1 mile loop hike with amazing views to the West and a fun little rock scramble.

Camping fee: $30 per night.

Reservations: in early spring, Loft Mountain Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis only. Beginning in early May, there are a combination of reservable campsites and first-come, first-served sites available. Our recommendation is that you arrive on a Monday or Tuesday to have better access to sites. Site #? is probably the BEST TENT SITE in Loft Mountain Campground. People stalked this site for days, including us. The hunt is on!

RV Information: Loft Mountain Campground features pull-through and deep back-in sites which can handle most RVs and a tow vehicle. Note, however, that the low canopy and trees on some turns can present challenges for taller RVs. There are NO electric or water hookups. Campground has potable water spigots and a dump station.

Generators: use is limited to certain areas and times designated on campground map.

Loft Mountain Campground is in the South District and provides access to Skyline Drive which has numerous stops along the 100 mile drive. Be prepared for 35 mile an hour driving and lots of stops.

We would recommend staying 5-7 days as a minimum to explore the South District/Loft Mountain Campground area.
