The A division of the Subway was formerly a private company known as Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT), its legacy today are the numbered lines on the system (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) and the 42nd Street Shuttle (S).

The city of New York took control of all privately operated subways in 1940. Since 1968 the New York City Transit Authority has been an agency of the Metropolitan Transport Authority a New York State run entity.

Trains that run on the IRT are narrower and shorter than those that run on the B Division (IND/BMT) Lines. The only place in the system where the two divisions meet side-by-side is at Queensboro Plaza.
