Honda Jazz/Fit GE, Gearbox & Clutch Replacement

How to replace a gearbox on a 2008-2014 Honda Jazz/Fit GE Chassis.

This car had around 107,000 miles and seems to have a fairly comprehensive service history up to that mileage, however the gearbox was making a whining sound.

Initially i had hoped it was the clutch release bearing but it turned out to require a gearbox. A second hand gearbox was bought from a local scrapyard for £100. Quotes for rebuilding the old gearbox were over £300, and the cheapest set of bearings i could find online was £180, it is not something i would be too confident to rebuild.

Overall however this gearbox was quite easy to remove and replace, while in there a new clutch kit was fitted which includes a pressure plate, clutch disk and release bearing. The clutch fitted was a generic brand sorurced from a local motor factors which cost £60.

The replacement gearbox was also given new driveshaft oil seals from Lings:

The seals were part numbers 91205-PL3-A01 & 91206-PHR-003. The total for these seals was £36.59 including delivery.

Genuine honda manual transmission fluid was put into the replacment gearbox, which was sourced from a local honda dealer, £30 for 2 litres.

In total the job here cost around £230, although gearboxes online seem to be selling for a bit more than £100.

This Jazz seems to be much quieter now when driving, and will soon be going back onto the road after a service and once the underside is treated to prevent rust.
