Indigenous youth in Canada have long faced literacy challenges brought about, in large part, by government policies of cultural assimilation. In this presentation, Meadow Schroeder from the University of Calgary’s Werklund School of Education describes a project that aimed to support the development of Indigenous children’s early literacy skills. We also heard from Elder Wallace on this important subject. Historically, storytelling has been a key component of Indigenous ways of knowing and teaching. In collaboration with Elders and educators, a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers designed a developmental, culturally-referenced storytelling program for kindergarten and grades 1 and 2 students. An overview of the program components and children’s learning outcomes will be provided, highlighting the links between culturally-relevant storytelling and the literacy learning of Indigenous children.
