The Jesus Seminar, formed in 1985 by more than 150 top biblical historians and scholars, including Robert W. Funk, John Dominic Crossan, and Marcus J. Borg, completely re-examined the words and deeds of Jesus using linguistic and historical methods — and their conclusion shocked the Christian world.

🔴 Their Verdict:
Over 82% of the sayings of Jesus in the Gospels are NOT authentic.
They used a colour-coded system to vote on each saying:

🔴 Red = Jesus definitely said this

🟠 Pink = Probably said something similar

⚪️ Grey = Probably not authentic

⚫️ Black = Definitely not authentic


According to their official report (The Five Gospels: What Did Jesus Really Say?, HarperOne, 1993), the majority of Jesus’ words were later inventions by Gospel writers and church theologians.

❌ What They Denied

1. The Crucifixion Narrative – The Jesus Seminar found the passion and resurrection stories to be later theological fabrications, not eyewitness history.

2. Miracles & Supernatural Acts – Stories such as walking on water, raising the dead, or the virgin birth were mythological additions inspired by pagan beliefs.

3. The Resurrection – Scholars like Crossan and Borg called it a metaphorical or visionary experience, not a physical event.

4. The Gospel of John – Entirely rejected as theological fiction, written to portray Jesus as divine, not historical.

5. Divinity Claims – Jesus never claimed to be God or part of a Trinity. He was a Jewish moral teacher who spoke in parables and wisdom sayings.
