Описание к видео "THE WHY OF ARMY MISSILES" '60s U.S. ARMY MISSILE GUIDANCE & PROPULSION SYSTEMS HONEST JOHN 81254

The Why Of Army Missiles is a short film that provides an overview on the types of missiles, guidance systems, and launch capabilities being used and developed by the U.S. Army. The film opens with an animation of Sir Isaac Newton reading under a tree. The film then reviews the basic concepts of motion using a man hitting a golf ball as an example. It returns to the use of animation to explain the basic principles of rocket propulsion, showing the functions of a rocket motor and fuel. The film shows a static rocket motor being tested (02:21). Army soldiers fit an MGR-1 Honest John rocket with an explosive and then launch the missile (02:57). The film shows some of the internal devices used to create a guided system, such as a gyroscope (03:27). An MGM-31 Pershing ballistic missile is prepared for launch (03:50). The missile is fired and flies through the air via its internal guiding system. A Nike Hercules surface-to-air guided missile is readied for launch (04:40); an external ground radar sends signals and steers the missile to its target. A Raytheon MIM-23 Hawk air defense system fires a missile at a flying aircraft target (05:39). A soldier shoots a shoulder-fired General Dynamics FIM-43 Redeye missile, which then hits the targeted helicopter. An Army unit operates a new BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile (06:28); the gunner directs the missile to the target. The film shows a montage of very short film clips of soldiers moving missiles, working on them, or preparing them for firing. An MGM-29 Sergeant surface-to-surface missile is launched (07:25). A soldier fires an M72 LAW rocket grenade. An MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile is fired and hits a tank (08:22). A Nike Zeus anti-ballistic missile is launched (08:38), and that is followed by footage of the launching of a Sprint missile. Missiles are loaded onto an Army transport plane (10:01). The mobile field missile MGM-52 Lance is moved into position (10:25). The film shows the Army Missile Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, (10:44), as well as a montage of shots of the men and women who work there—primarily scientists and researchers developing new missile technology. Two men observe a test in a lab (11:17). Scientists research rocket fuel and guidance systems. The film then concludes showing soldiers preparing to fire a rocket.
