Beachfront homes crumble into the ocean as twin hurricanes smash North Carolina

Six beach houses collapsed into the ocean in Buxton, North Carolina, on Tuesday, September 30, as Hurricane Humberto and Hurricane Imelda brought strong winds and big swells to the Outer Banks.

The National Park Service (NPS) said five unoccupied houses succumbed to the swells between 2 and 2:45 pm on Tuesday. A sixth home collapsed later that night around 11 pm, according to local news reports.

Footage filmed by James Brett Barley shows the dramatic moment one of the homes was knocked off its pilings on Tuesday afternoon after being battered by strong surf and debris from other collapsed residences.

“This is insane,” Barley can be heard saying in the video. In an Instagram post, Barley added, “It’s just heavy to watch a town you grew up in look like this, while knowing how much beautiful beach and vegetation used to lie between these homes and the ocean.”

Officials warned residents to stay away from the collapsed structures due to the presence of potentially hazardous debris and noted that the beachfront would be closed until further notice for public safety.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said it expected dangerous surf conditions for the rest of the week, with coastal flood warnings in effect until Friday afternoon for large swaths of the North Carolina coastline.
