Is it actual blood? Not quite.

This "bleeding" glacier is actually caused by a trapped, subglacial pool of hypersaline water—sealed off from light and oxygen for millions of years. When this iron-rich water finally escapes through fissures in the ice and hits the air, it oxidizes instantly, turning a gruesome deep red.

Discovered in 1911 by geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor, we once thought red algae was the culprit. Now we know the truth: it’s a time capsule of ancient chemistry.
