On Kerala’s 69th Formation Day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formally declared the state free from extreme poverty — a first-of-its-kind achievement in India. The milestone comes under the Extreme Poverty Eradication Programme (EPEP) launched in 2021, aimed at ensuring no one lives on less than ₹180 a day. The initiative, driven by community participation and micro-level projects, reflects Kerala’s sustained focus on social welfare. According to NITI Aayog’s 2023 MPI report, only 0.55% of the population remains multidimensionally poor — the lowest in India.
