During the 2011 eruption of the Shinmoedake volcano, a large amount of vesiculated magma ejected from January 26 to 27, and then lava, which was a fully degassed magma, accumulated in the crater. From this footage, you can see how vigorous fumarolic steams are rising from the hot lava that just appeared. Before this eruption there was an emerald green-colored crater lake at the crater, which disappeared under the lava.

In the 2011 eruption, the lava filled about half of the crater, but in 2018 the new lava completely filled the inside of the crater, and part of it overflowed from the northwestern edge and stopped at the hillside. In addition to this, there are beautiful landscapes made of lava around Kirishima, so please try to find them.

The lava found in Kirishima has a higher viscosity than Hawaiian basaltic lava, but it is not as high as the silicic lava found in Unzen or Usu, so it does not become a dome. The viscosity of lava changes not only with the amount of SiO2 content in it, but also with the temperature, water content, and amount of bubbles and crystals.
