Following the success of our ‘Celebration of the Sardine’ last August, the restaurant Argoe teamed up with @cornishsardines, @newlynharbourlights and @youngfishermennetwork to bring you something even more special for 2025.

This August bank holiday they were all part of a new Cornish Sardine Festival in Newlyn, centred around Argoe and spread across three other sites in the harbour.

This wasn’t a Newlyn Fish Festival mk2, but a completely fresh take that will grow organically year on year, led from the heart of the fishing community. A modern celebration of a traditional industry that has shaped this town for centuries.

At Argoe they had grilled sardines, served Portuguese style with chips and salad, Newlyn ‘boquerones’ - marinated sardines with fresh bread, and… the sardine pizzette made a comeback!

Harbour Lights had a marquee on the carpark, a bar well stocked with beer, and an eclectic lineup of live music, including Argoe favourites @boilerhouse, and Cornish alt-folk four piece @theotherwoman.band.

@tom_lambourn @fishermanandhiswife and the ring net crews had their boats alongside the net sheds and down on the pontoons for visitors to view and jump aboard. Last year this was a huge hit with locals, who discovered the passion these guys had for their craft, and learnt about the wonderful sustainable industry on their doorstep.

@trelawneyfish the store was scrubbed up ready to host a small and colourful exhibition of photography of the area, Newlyn’s fishing industry and of course, the Cornish Sardine. We couldn’t wait to see work from the likes of @michaeleddy @leftoverlight and @joewhoward against the industrial backdrop of a working processing factory, where sardines are packed daily and shipped across the UK.

The Cornish Maritime Trust brought up the traditional sailing luggers Silverwing and Barnabas to the Canners Slip - in full sail on the Saturday! Several local artists were there to capture the festival on canvas in all its splendour and spectacle.

Newlyn is the heart of the Sardine fishery, every day between July the industry unfolds around us, on the quayside, in factories processing and packing the fish, and in the waters just outside the Harbour walls. There was surely no better place to gather and celebrate this fish. We hoped to see you here.

August 23rd & 24th. 12-7. No bookings necessary. Just turned up, ‘packed in’ and enjoyed the fish!

The fishermen of Newlyn land the finest handline, trawl, net and pot caught fish and shellfish daily so that Michelin starred Cornish chefs like Nathan Outlaw can source #MSCCertified #Hake, #Sardine.
