I'm Matt with etrailer, and today we're talking about the Yakima HighRoad rooftop bike rack on our 2023 Ford F-150. Now this is gonna be a great option for you if you're trying to go out on a bike ride and you wanna put your more light duty bikes on top of your roof, or in some cases, you can put this on a ladder rack or a bed rack if you have one of those. We just have a roof rack today, but it's gonna be the same either way, so let's check it out. With it on your roof, this is probably gonna be the highest it's gonna sit on top of our vehicle and it is gonna be really hard to reach. If you're going out with a friend and you have two of these on here, I'd recommend you both helping each other to get this off. Now if you don't have a friend, if you're riding by yourself, I'd recommend looking at some other options.
If you have a bed rack like the Yakima Bedrock, that's gonna be a great option because it's just gonna sit right here on your bed and this is gonna be a lot easier to grab than up on top of your roof. Or you can even get inside your bed too if you have a ladder rack. Looking at how our bike sits on here, we can take a closer look at how it's held in place. So we'll notice on the front tire, we have this cradle that's gonna apply pressure to the front of it and the back of that tire. And really it's giving us a good sturdy hold.
And on the back tire we're gonna have this rear strap that just pulls down and holds this rear tire in place. Now the bike we have today is gonna be this length that's gonna line right up with our crossbars, so that's something to think about. Removing the strap is gonna be a little bit more difficult, but let me show you what that's gonna look like. Where we wanna start is on that rear tire, so I'm gonna just press in on that button, and pull this through. (plastic snaps) Might have to wiggle a little bit so it comes all the way out.
(plastic snaps) And with that removed, I'm just gonna tuck this away so I don't have to deal with it anymore. Coming over to the front side, I'm gonna start by maintaining control of my front fork, and then we're gonna go over to this knob. I'm gonna loosen this all the way because what this is gonna do is allow that back cradle to fully fall back down. So with that outta the way, you can see this is gonna lower down. I wanna make sure I'm maintaining good control of this.
Might have to push it back some because the frame of our bike can get out of the way. And with that down, outta the way, I'm actually gonna hand this off to a friend of mine. I got Tom here with us today. Gonna lift up, just hand it off to 'em. As you saw, it was a little bit difficult to get it off of here, and that's just because we do have it on our roof. If you have it in your bed, it's gonna be a lot easier. Another thing that's gonna play into that is just gonna be the weight of your bike. And this carrier is gonna have a weight capacity of 45 pounds on road, and it's gonna drop to 27 pounds off road. So in most cases, I'm gonna recommend sticking to any of your lighter bikes or even your carbon frame bikes because that's gonna be a lot easier getting this on and off of here. And this is a really carbon frame friendly bike because it only attaches to the tires of your bike. Another thing that's gonna lend to something that's gonna be more bike specific is gonna be this rear cradle that has the ability to adjust for different wheel bases, having the ability to slide all the way back here. So you're gonna be able to accommodate a wide range of wheel bases. And right next to that we're gonna have this integrated bike cable lock. Now when you do get this, you'll notice we only have a plastic core at the end of it, you have to invest in a metal lock core, just for that additional security. We can start talking about how this is gonna look on top of your roof. So the first measurement I'm gonna get is gonna be the total height it adds. And from the top of your crossbar to about where that hand knob is back there is gonna stick at about 4 1/2 inches roughly, so it's not gonna take up too much space up here. Now of course, that's gonna change on when you have your bike on top of here, and that's gonna depend on how tall your bike is. As for the space it takes up on the crossbar itself, if I go from where that base of the
