An outing of luxury sports car enthusiasts in Japan ended in an expensive freeway pileup - smashing a stunning eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes.

Police say they believe the accident Sunday was touched off when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the median barrier. He spun across the freeway, and the other cars collided while trying to avoid hitting his car.

A total of 14 cars, eight of which were Ferraris, crashed in a chain collision on a Japanese expressway Sunday, but police have not determined the cause. The cars were out for a luxury sportscar enthusiast event, something traffic police spokesman Mitsuyoshi Isejima called a "gathering of narcissists." None of the drivers, ages 37 to 60 years old, were seriously injured. The luxury vehicles involved in the crash — including a Lamborghini and two Mercedes — were likely worth more than $1 million together, the Associated Press reported.Police said some of the vehicles were beyond repair.

Police say the accident likely occurred after a Ferrari driver tried to change lanes and hit the median, then spun and collided with other cars. Police say the road was wet, and an eyewitness said the drivers were traveling at 87 to 100 miles per hour, according to Japan Today.

Bloomberg reports that the Ferrari driver who changed lanes, a 60-year-old man from Fukuoka prefecture, may face charges if it is determined he was speeding.
