The UK has initiated an emergency prisoner release plan to address severe overcrowding in prisons. This plan involves the early release of around 1,700 prisoners in England and Wales. The scheme targets inmates serving sentences of less than five years, who will be released after serving 40% of their term instead of the usual 50%.

Certain categories of offenders, such as those convicted of serious violent crimes, sex offenses, and domestic abuse, are excluded from early release. Released prisoners will be monitored by the Probation Service, which includes measures like electronic tagging and curfews.

The plan has sparked concerns about the readiness of the probation service to handle the increased workload and the potential risks to public safety. However, the government insists that the measures are necessary to alleviate the immediate crisis in prison capacity.
