The Reclaim, Revalue, Reframe project is strengthening waste picker integration by recognizing reclaimers as key stakeholders in South Africa’s recycling system. With support from the Department of Science and Innovation and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, stakeholders collaboratively developed the Waste Picker Integration Guideline.

A key outcome of this initiative is the Reclaim, Revalue, Reframe website, providing resources to municipalities, industry, and policymakers to implement effective integration strategies. Notably, training efforts revealed that municipal officials, not waste pickers, required the most capacity building to support integration efforts.

Through webinars, partnerships, and a National Waste Picker Integration Registration System, the project fosters collaboration between reclaimers, municipalities, and industry. By centering reclaimers in decision-making, this initiative sets a precedent for inclusive and sustainable waste management worldwide.
