"We Sri Lankans have suffered for so long with war and with poverty and with bad governance, but yet we have such an intelligent, educated population, that what we are longing for is to go from being a third world country to being a first world country, at least a second world country. And for that what we need is a president, a leader, who adheres to systems, who follows systems, rather than practises unilateralism, who is bound by the rule of law, rather than have for us the rule of man. That is the type of leader we are looking for, someone who will keep his word, who will do what he says, and who operates under law. We don''t have that type of leadership as yet in our country."

STORYLINE:
The streets of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo were calm on Sunday, as Sri Lanka readied itself for Tuesday''s presidential election, the first since the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels after a quarter-century of war.
Saturday saw the last day of campaigning between the two main architects of last year''s victory over the Tamil Tiger rebels - the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the main opposition candidate, former army chief Sarath Fonseka.
Opinion varied on the streets of the Sri Lankan capital on Sunday, one man unequivocally supported the current president, while another said the present government had done nothing for him.
Political analyst Jehan Perera meanwhile, said that Sri Lankans were longing to make the transition from being a third world country to being a first world country.
For that, he said, the country needed a leader "who adheres to systems, who follows systems, rather than practises unilateralism, who is bound by the rule of law, rather than have for us the rule of man. That is the type of leader we are looking for, someone who will keep his word, who will do what he says, and who operates under law."
Sarath Fonseka claimed on Saturday that Sri Lanka''s ruling party plans to instigate violence to keep voters from the ballot box in an attempt to secure victory during the ballot.
A government spokesman denied the opposition''s allegation.
Election-related violence has marred the campaign for weeks; five people have been killed and 78 wounded since December, according to a local group tracking the violence.
Both candidates have tried to cash in politically on their popularity among the Sinhalese majority for crushing the Tamil insurgency.
Some 80-thousand to 100-thousand people were killed during the fighting, as the Tiger rebels sought an independent state for the ethnic Tamil minority in the country''s north and east.
The Tamil vote could be crucial to secure either candidate''s victory.
The main Tamil political party is supporting Fonseka.
