Sometimes, people like yours truly look forward to spectating tennis events just because you look forward to see who could potentially match up against one another in the draw. The Night Doubles events in Hawaii are primetime spots to see things like this! Matchups that seem to always get the most attention are ones where all local talent face one another, all to see who will emerge as the strongest local hope to fair in the remainder of the tournament. These players traditionally become the automatic crowd favorite into the later rounds as well.

In 2012, it was an all local girls matchup in the 2nd round of the annual Kailua Women's Night Doubles as 3 top juniors & a familiar face of USTA Hawaii Pacific Section took to court 6 for the later round matchup of the night. Hailing from Punahou & Mililani, the 5th seeded team of Ashley Ishimura & Alyssa Tobita looked poised to the eventual fan favorite as one of the all local junior player duos. Both girls claimed High school state championships earlier that year (Ashley in doubles & Alyssa in singles), making this a top level junior team that could hang with the best of the tournament! Both girls were ranked in the top 5 in girls juniors (singles & doubles) in Hawaii during the time of this tournament.
Standing in their way early on was another crowd favorite of local Kailua junior Cori Cummings & Director of Junior Tennis for the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Mimi Kennell! At the time, Cori swung her racquet for Le Jardin Academy, making it all the way to the Final 4 in the HHSAA Championships that year. Mimi achieved a former #1 rank in Taiwan in her college days & enjoyed the opportunity to play alongside & mentor a current up & coming Hawaii junior. Cori brought the youth & Mimi brought the experience, providing a fun atmosphere to watch in their opening round to get to this match.
