STORYLINE
Traditionally, Hard Rock Cafe executives have smashed a guitar or two at the opening of a new cafe.
But on Friday, Hard Rock decided to make its grand entrance at its new location in New York's Times Square, by smashing 100 guitars, creating the World's Largest Guitar Smash - right on Broadway in Times Square.
More than 100 Gibson guitars were smashed simultaneously on to concrete blocks outside the new home of Hard Rock Cafe New York, signalling its official opening.
Among the celebrities present were rock musicians Steven Van Zandt (Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band), and Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys).
Friday's event marked Hard Rock International's move from its original location on 57th Street, to occupy the former site of the historic Paramount Theatre.
The guitar smash and opening of the Times Square cafe will kick off a month-long celebration, which will include concerts and special events, as well as a grand opening party, featuring a live performance by super group Velvet Revolver.
