5 Out Circle Offense vs 2-3 zone:

Overview: In this video, we break down the Circle Motion Offense and how to effectively run it against a 2-3 zone defense. Whether you're coaching youth or high school players, the Circle Offense is a great continuity system that can be adapted to attack zone coverages. We’ll show you how to adjust the 5-out Circle Motion Offense to create high-percentage shots, utilize cutters, and find gaps in the zone. If you're looking to improve your motion offense vs. 2-3 zone, this breakdown covers multiple reads, including high post catches, L-cuts, and ball screen actions. From Circle Offense basketball concepts to in-game strategies, this is your complete guide to using the Circle Offense against a 2-3 zone. Perfect for coaches looking to counter a 2-3 defense with motion offense or install the Circle Motion Offense in youth basketball.

Coaches and players — by request, we’re going to go over the Circle Offense against a 2-3 zone.

Jumping into it: the Circle Offense starts with five players out on the perimeter. When the ball is passed to a wing, the top player screens by the elbow. The player on the wing comes off a rub cut toward the hoop, and the corner comes off the screen to the top. The player rub cutting fills to the corner, and the screener fills to the wing. This action can be performed on either side of the floor, making the Circle Offense a continuity.

Now, the Circle Offense is generally used against man-to-man, but it can be tweaked to destroy 2-3 zones.

The first tweak we’ll make is: instead of screening the elbow area, we’ll find the defender who plays the opposite elbow spot in the 2-3 zone. If the defender plays under the screen, the rub cutter can stop behind the screen and get a shot.

If the player coming off the cut isn’t a shooter or doesn’t have a good look, they’ll continue the cut. When they get to the ball-side elbow/high post area, they’ll pause and look for a pass. If there’s a catch in the high post, we play out of it. The two corner players will dive to the hoop, and the two players on the wing will find openings on the perimeter. Usually, it’s best to drop down to the free-throw line extended so the high post player can see.

Just like with any zone, looking opposite is beneficial because zones usually shift toward the ball. Looking opposite here gets the offense an open three.

If the screen is set and the defender jumps high side to stop the cut or shot, we’ll have the screener slip to the high post for a catch — looking to score, looking opposite, and looking for cutters going toward the hoop.

The next option is to have the corner player make an L-cut and get a catch up top. Getting a catch up top makes the top defender guard the ball, putting a lot of pressure on the defense by isolating the bottom defender of the 2-3 zone.

If the bottom defender doesn’t come out and guard the pass to the wing, shoot the ball. But if the defender does come up to guard the ball, look for the cutter to fill into the short corner and then to the corner. There should be a great one-more pass that leaves the filling cutter wide open.

If there’s a possible mismatch in the post, you can isolate it and see if you can get a 1-on-1 in the post by having your post-up player rub cut and post in the middle of the zone.

Ball screens are extremely effective versus a 2-3 zone, especially with the Circle Offense. When the ball screen is set, the ball handler comes off the screen and the screener rolls to the hoop. If the defender doesn’t help, go to the hoop and score. If the opposite top defender helps, it’s a great opportunity for a kick-out to the wing. When the wing receives the ball, they can shoot it if they’re open. If they’re guarded, have the roller stay down at the hoop to allow for play from the middle of the key and the short corner.

When rolling, go toward the middle of the zone — making it a shorter pass. When catching the ball in the heart of the zone, it becomes easier to pass to the short corner or perimeter and gives the roller the opportunity to choose a side to score.

When playing against zones, it’s important to shift the defense and see how it reacts. Sometimes, one pass is all you need to get the defense to shift and get an easy bucket — just like when a pass back from the one to the five happens. It can create openings to drive and score.
