Do your kids mostly listen during story time, or do they participate?

This video draws on a 2023 U.S.-based study published in Early Childhood Research Quarterly that examined how children’s engagement during shared book reading relates to early literacy development.

Rather than focusing only on how often families read, the study examined what children were doing during reading moments. Researchers found that children’s active engagement, including talking about the story, maintaining attention, and participating in back-and-forth interaction with adults, was associated with stronger early literacy skills.

These associations remained even after accounting for reading frequency and access to books in the home. The findings point to the role of participation during shared reading, not just exposure, in supporting early literacy development.
