খুলনা জেলার নামকরণের ইতিহাস নিয়ে অনেক মত ও জনশ্রুতি পাওয়া যায়:
 তবে বহুল প্রচলিত মতানুসারে জানা যায়- ধনপতি সওদাগরের দ্বিতীয় স্ত্রীর নাম ছিল খুলনা। শহর থেকে দেড় কিলোমিটার দূরে ভৈরব নদীর তীরে,ধনপতি সওদাগর তার স্ত্রী খুলনার নামে, ‘খুলনেশ্বরী দেবী মন্দির' নির্মান করেন। সেই নির্মিত খুলনেশ্বরী মন্দিরের দেবীর নামানুসারে,খুলনা অঞ্চলের নামকরণ করা হয়েছে।
 আবার অনেকে মনে করেন- ১৭৬৬ সালে ‘ফলমাউথ' জাহাজের নাবিকদের, উদ্ধারকৃত রেকর্ডে লিখিত, Culnea শব্দ থেকে খুলনার নাম রাখা হয়।
 অনেকে আবার এমনও ধারণা করেণ: বৃটিশ আমলের মানচিত্রে লিখিত,Jessore-Culna শব্দ থেকে অঞ্চলটির নাম,খুলনা হয়েছে।
 আবার অনেক বিজ্ঞজনেরা মনে করেন ‘কিসমত খুলনা' মৌজা থেকে, খুলনা নামের উৎপত্তি হয়েছে।
 আবার কেউ কেউ ধারণা করেন, খুলনা শহর যেখানে, সেখানে তৎসময়ে, সুন্দরবনের গভীর জঙ্গলের অংশ ছিল। এই অঞ্চলের পাশ দিয়ে বয়ে যেত, বিশাল ভৈরব নদ। যেখানে ঝড় উঠলে ভয়ঙ্কর আকার ধারণ করত। তখন মাঝিদের জীবন বাঁচাতে, ‘খুলোনা, খুলোনা’ বলে সতর্ক করে দেয়া হত। এ ‘খুলোনা’ শব্দ থেকে খুলনা নামের উৎপত্তি।
 আরেকটি তত্ত্ব পাওয়া যায় যে- খুলনা নামটি এসেছে বাংলা শব্দ "খুলনা" থেকে, যার অর্থ "খোলা"। এই তত্ত্বটি, রূপসা নদীর মোহনায় জেলাটি অবস্থিত, এই সত্যের উপর ভিত্তি করে। আর রুপসা নদীটি এই সময়ে বঙ্গোপসাগরে মিশেছে, তাই এই কারণেই জেলাটির নাম খুলনা দেওয়া হতে পারে।
 আবার অনেকে মনে করেন-“খুলনা” নামটি বাংলা শব্দ “কুল” থেকে এসেছে, যার অর্থ “একটি পরিবার” বা “একটি দল”। কারণ এই অঞ্চলটিতে প্রচুর সংখ্যক পরিবার এবং সম্প্রদায়ের, বসবাস ছিল। ফলে এলাকাটিকে “খুলনা” হিসাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছিল।
উপরে উল্লেখিত মতামত গুলো হতে অনুমান করা গেল যে, আসলে খুলনা জেলার নামকরণের সঠিক মত কোনটি? তা নিশ্তভাবে বলার কোন উপায় নেই।
ইতিহাস পর্ালোচনা করে জানা যায়- খুলনার প্রাচীন জনপদের নাম ছিল সপ্তগাঁও। আর “খুলনা” নামটি প্রথম 19 শতকের গোড়ার দিকে, ব্যবহৃত হয়েছিল। যখন ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানি এই অঞ্চলে একটি, ট্রেডিং পোস্ট স্থাপন করেছিল।
১৯৯৭ সালে সুন্দরবন ইউনেসকোর, ওয়ার্ল্ড হেরিটেজ সাইটের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়।
 ১৮৪২ সালে এটি যশোর জেলার মহাকুমা হিসবে, প্রতিষ্ঠা পায়। পরবর্তীতে প্রশাসনিক সুবিধার জন্য, ১৮৮১ সালে খুলনাকে আলাদা জেলার, মর্যাদা দেওয়া হয়। এবং পরে অবকাঠামো নির্মাণ শেষে, ১৮৮২ সালে খুলনা, জেলা হিসাবে আনুষ্ঠানিক যাত্রা শুরু করে।
১২ ডিসেম্বর ১৮৮৪ সালে, খুলনা পৌরসভা ঘোষণা করা হয়। এবং একই সালের ১২ ডিসেম্বর, মিউনিসিপ্যাল কর্পোরেশনে উন্নীত করা হয়। পরবর্ীতে ৬ই আগস্ট ১৯৯০ সালে‌, খুলনাকে সিটি কর্পোরেশন হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়।There are many opinions and rumors about the history of the naming of Khulna district
However, according to popular opinion, the name of Dhanpati Saudagar's second wife was Khulna. One and a half kilometers from the city, on the banks of river Bhairav, Dhanpati Saudagar built the 'Khulneswari Devi Temple' in the name of his wife Khulna. The Khulna region is named after the goddess of the Khulneswari temple built there.

Many people think that Khulna was named after the word Culnea written in the recovered records of the sailors of 'Falmouth' ship in 1766.

 Many people also think that: The name of the region is derived from the word Jessore-Culna written on the British era map.
Again, many scholars think that the name Khulna originated from 'kismat Khulna' Mauza.

 Others believe that the city of Khulna was, at that time, part of the deep forest of the Sundarbans. The great Bhairava river used to flow through this region. Where the storm would take a terrible shape. At that time, to save the lives of the sailors, they were warned to say, 'Don't open, don't open'. The name Khulna is derived from the word Khulona

Another theory is that the name Khulna is derived from the Bengali word "khulna", which means "to open". This theory is based on the fact that the district is located at the mouth of the Rupsa river. And the Rupsa river joins the Bay of Bengal at this time, hence the name of the district may have been given as Khulna.

 Many people think that the name "Khulna" is derived from the Bengali word "Kul", which means "a family" or "a group". Because this area was inhabited by a large number of families and communities. As a result the area was referred to as “Khulna”.

In 1842 it was established as Mahakuma of Jessore district. Later, for administrative convenience, Khulna was given the status of a separate district in 1881. And later after the construction of infrastructure, in 1882 Khulna started its official journey as a district.

On 12 December 1884, Khulna Municipality was declared. And on December 12 of the same year, it was upgraded to a Municipal Corporation. Later on 6th August 1990, Khulna was declared as a City Corporation.

In 1997 Sundarbans was included in UNESCO World Heritage Site.
