Скачать или смотреть UN forced to cut food aid to 1.7 million in South Sudan amid rising prices

On Tuesday, June 14th, the United Nations World Food Program announced to suspend humanitarian food aid to at least 1.7 million hungry people in South Sudan, blaming critical funding shortages.


Acting country director Adeyinka Badejo-Sanogo this year’s work was far exceeding the WFP’s capacity.


She said the agency originally planned to provide food assistance to 6.2 million people this year. As the humanitarian needs and food prices are both soaring, WFP had to suspend part of its support in South Sudan.


Speaking at a press conference Tuesday, she warned of the impact of the cutback.


“These cuts are happening at the start of the lean season when families have completely exhausted any food reserves and are likely to continue to suffer acute levels of hunger as the lean season deepens,” said Badejo-Sanogo.


She told the media that the WFP went into “famine-prevent” mode in South Sudan.


Right now, South Sudan faces unprecedented hunger amid climate shocks, soaring food prices linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and recovery from the civil war. Over 60% of the population of more than 11 million people faces severe food insecurity, according to WFP.


Among those now losing food aid in the middle of South Sudan’s lean season are 178,000 children who will no longer receive school meals, WFP said.


Food security experts have warned that 1.4 million children will be acutely malnourished during the lean season between June and August.


In fact, on March 14th, food support to countries including Yemen and Niger was halved by the WFP as it struggles to find funds to feed those in need in Ukraine and across the world.
