Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has stated that most of the militants infiltrating into Pakistan under the banner of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are Afghan nationals.
“In the TTP formations entering Pakistan, 70 percent are Afghans,” Field Marshal Asim Munir said while addressing the National Ulema Conference held in Islamabad on December 10.
Although full details of his speech were not immediately released, excerpts of his address were aired on television. During his speech, the army chief once again urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used for terrorist activities against Pakistan.
He questioned, “Is Afghanistan not spilling the blood of our Pakistani children?” and recalled that Pakistan had clearly conveyed to the Afghan Taliban that they must choose between Pakistan and the TTP.
Speaking about the four-day military confrontation with India in May, Field Marshal Asim Munir said Pakistan’s armed forces received “divine help” during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
“We felt divine assistance during the operation,” he said.
The conflict erupted after India launched strikes across Pakistan on May 7, following an attack in occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for the attack without providing evidence, while Pakistan rejected the allegations.
The army chief also stated that among the 57 Islamic countries in the world, Pakistan has been honoured with the responsibility of protecting the Haramain Sharifain (Makkah and Madina).
He drew a parallel between Pakistan and the first Islamic state established in Saudi Arabia 1,400 years ago, saying both were founded in the month of Ramadan and involved the concept of migration.
Field Marshal Asim Munir further emphasized that in an Islamic state, only the state has the authority to declare jihad.
“No individual or group can issue a fatwa for jihad without the consent and authority of the state,” he said, while also citing several verses from the Holy Quran during his address.
