According to the military historian Simon Anglim, the concept of a special unit is insufficiently researched or theoretically justified. Unlike the war in general or insurrection in particular, which is based on the writings of Carl von Clausewitz or Mao Zedong, special units have not been preceded by any pertinent theoretician. Furthermore, the distinction is made more difficult by three factors: First, official doctrines are inaccessible due to secrecy. Second, the distinction is blurred by "sensationalist" media, especially in film, television and video games. In the end, commanding officers would be exposed to the conflict between politics and operational control; while political elites counter special forces with enthusiasm or even inappropriate expectations for their supposed or demonstrated effectiveness, from time to time precisely this patronage, the comparatively high resource requirements and the prestige of such units, weighs on the commanders of conventional units with a traditional sense of duty.

In the United States, the entirety of American special forces is referred to as Special Operations Forces, as the term Special Forces is already there as the proper name of the corresponding unit of the US Army is occupied.
